DESCRIPTION:As a faithful supporter of science\, you might be interested in a unique science event that is free and requires only a working television in your abode. On Wednesday\, March 24 at 7:00 ‒ 8:00 PM Pacific\, Washington State University is hosting an hour-long event\, “Three Minute Thesis”\, that will be shown on Northwest Public Broadcasting (KWSU channel 10). Twenty students seeking a doctoral degree in science or education describe their research in three minutes or less to a lay-person audience. \n Just imagine how challenging and creative it must be to squeeze thousands of words\, dozens of images\, and various technical concepts into 180 seconds. The one who best succeeds wins a $3\,000 travel award.  Here are some topics. \n • Pathways for preventing tick-borne diseases. \n• Dairy manure compost pellets for controlling environmental pollution. \n• Mutually beneficial interactions between fungi and bacteria in soil surrounding plant roots. \n• Soil microbes that safely reduce the loss of nitrogen from agricultural fertilizer applications. \n• Nursing curriculum that decreases faculty and student stress for work-ready nurse graduates. \n• Curbing out-of-control inflammation from rheumatoid arthritis.

SUMMARY:Wildfire 101: Mitigation & Planning
DESCRIPTION:Wildfire 101: Mitigation and Planning\n2020 was a bad year for wildfires. Lengthy periods of dry conditions coupled with the intense wind events of Labor Day sparked one of the most catastrophic wildfire seasons the West has seen. Now\, the 20′-21′ winter in Washington has seen above average temperatures with normal to high levels of precipitation. This has led many to worry that the 2021 summer will be long and dry\, with an abundance of vegetation fuels across the landscape. \nWhile the ground may still be white with snow\, the spring buds have already begun to sprout and the days are getting longer. Don’t wait to begin treating your forest or planning for an emergency before it’s too late. Now is the time to both figuratively and literally lace up our boots and get outside. \nWhether this is a refresher or you’re just now looking into how you can better prepare your forest\, home\, and community\, this will cover the baseline information you need to know to be prepared for the wildfire season. \nTopics:\n\nHome Ignition Zone\, Firewise®\, and wildfire resilient landscaping – Guy Gifford\nForest fuels management and basic wildfire behavior – Rob Lionberger\nEmergency planning and resources and community engagement – Ashley Blazina\nCase Study: A story from the 2014 wildfires in the Methow – Ken Bevis\n\nThis webinar will also include a presentation from a landowner who encountered a wildfire on their property. We will here some of the success and failures they experienced and what they learned from their experience. \nWhen:\nTuesday\, March 23rd\, 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM. \nWhere:\nThis will be a Zoom webinar. \nCost:\nFREE!!! \nRegister Here
